"Strangers" is a suspense thriller revolving around a couple in a remote suburban house who are targeted by three dangerous masked strangers. The resulting clashes force the couple to go well beyond what they thought themselves capable of in order to survive.
The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known.

The Strangers is full of cheap scares and unoriginality but does contain an ending that is worthy of a stomach ache beyond belief. The movie just falls flat to its outstanding marketing and "true events" comment. I honestly have never sat in a movie before and had more physical pain running through my body, than I did with this film. I am not going to give anything away I promise, but when it comes to films that have slow stabbing scenes, I honestly cannot handle it. There are 2 classic slow stabbing scenes that come to my mind that make me sick to even think about them. One being the slow stabbing from Saving Private Ryan. That scene still sticks with me to this day. The other is from Zodiac where the couple is at that lake and the killer just stabs the hell out of them. For some reason, I can watch people getting shot, blown up, dissected, tortured and mutilated in movies all day long. In fact, I can watch those Hostel flicks and just blow them right off. Yes, they are disgusting, but a slow stabbing just makes me feel queasy. Now, out of all slow stabbing scenes, The Strangers takes the cake. I am not lying or exaggerating, but I actually felt sharp pains in my stomach when I was watching this one particular scene. The Strangers stars Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Empire Records) and Scott Speedman (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution).

I think everyone can agree that when the trailers first came out for The Strangers, it looked just like the Kate Bekinsale/Luke Wilson thriller; Vacancy. It is pretty much the same story where a couple gets terrorized by a group of crazy people. Well, with The Strangers, you have a loving couple (Speedman and Tyler) who just left a party to go to Speedman's summer house. They were attending a wedding reception and at this reception Speedman popped the question to Tyler and she turned him down. As they awkwardly drive to the summer house, they are both in tears. They decide to stay the night and will part in the morning. BUT WAIT!!!!! THEY ARE NOT ALONE!!!! They start getting weird knocks at the door and before long, three INSANE people with the weirdest masks in the world, start terrorizing them. That is essentially the entire movie. The couple is just being scared to death and they need to save themselves from these insane characters.
Overall, like I said above, the movie is full of cheap scares. What I mean by that is the scares are not natural. They are only put there to scare the audience, which really ruins the suspension of disbelief for me. Now I understand that some of these cheap scares work. There is a great one in the trailer where Liv Tyler walks out in the living room of the house and one of the killers walks out with that weird mask on. She has no idea he is there. That worked the first couple of times throughout the film, but then it became really old after a while. It lost its charm and actually became tiresome to see. Meaning that as the film went on, these killers would appear behind the couple every once in a while and then disappear. THEY WERE ONLY DOING THAT TO SCARE THE AUDIENCE. It had nothing to do with scaring the actual characters themselves.

One thing that I will give the film props on is that you can usually predict what is going to happen in a lot of these suspense thrillers. I kept predicting parts of the story and I was always wrong. I found myself second guessing what I was thinking. They did a good job of keeping you guessing and making you wonder why the hell these people were terrorizing this couple.

I just didn't find any originality in the film though. It just felt like another movie where characters are being terrorized by bad guys. That is all it is. There is NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY. It is just an excuse to get people in the theatres. This is a movie you have seen 100 times over.

I guess the main selling point of the film is that it is based on TRUE EVENTS! Come on! Anything is based on TRUE EVENTS. They just do that for marketing purposes. As the beginning of the movie states, Kristen McKay and James Hoyt were terrorized at Hoyt's summer house in February of 2005. They go on to say that the events at this house will never truly be known. Since we do not know what really happened, a lot of the movie is fictionalized. The movie is a product of its amazing trailer and marketing. The radio spots for the movie are insane. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the movie is bad. It just doesn't really add anything new to the horror genre. I would just recommend the rental/cable viewing on this, hence the 2.5 BDK rating. There are some really intense scenes and like I said, the ending will always stick with me.

Can they escape their silent, nameless abusers or will they succumb to a grisly demise? Frankly, it doesn't matter. We learn little about them and even less about their foes, save that the former are good kids and the latter are soulless monsters. Those eerie masks serve as stand-ins for whatever social calamity you want to apply to them: street crime, terrorism, Dina Lohan... the ugly truths of an uncaring universe. They are unknowable and inscrutable, and yet they are also supposed to be merely human -- suggesting how monstrous we can be to each other as a way of accentuating the horror. The randomness of their crimes certainly makes them unsettling in a very knee-jerk sense, but the manner of their attack destroys the plausibility on which The Strangers banks so heavily. Director Bryan Bertino arbitrarily stacks the deck in their favor, creating serious questions of logic that have bedeviled horror movies since time began.
 
The killers know the terrain better than those who have lived there for years, moving with ease through the darkened house while their victims stumble about like frightened sheep. They can also anticipate the couple's every move with preposterous accuracy, see in the dark better than most owls, and make less noise than the average mouse fart... that is until The Strangers requires a few more spooky sounds, upon which time the male of the trio suddenly develops a rasping case of emphysema that can be heard in the next time zone.
